Second Sonar Herbicide Treatment to be Performed Tomorrow Sept. 14th

Aquatechnex crews spent today posting shoreline notification along affected areas of Lake Tapps in anticipation of tomorrow’s Second Sonar Herbicide Treatment. Our team will be applying Sonar Q to those areas mapped to maintain levels in the lake. Sampling taken last Thursday show that the levels are right on tract with where we would expect them to be and this treatment will help maintain those levels.

Second Sonar Herbicide Treatment Scheduled for September 14th

Aquatechnex biologist will be making the second of three Sonar herbicide applications to the mapped treatment areas on Lake Tapps this coming week. The treatment is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 14th. We will be providing signage posted on each property that will be affected by this the previous day. Sonar Q, a granular form of this material will be applied and will augment the treatment made on August 31st.

First Sonar Treatment Planned for Early Next Week

Aquatechnex will be performing the first application of Sonar Aquatic Herbicide to Lake Tapps the week of August 30th.

This work is governed by a permit from the Washington Department of Ecology. That permit requires us to post signs on each property prior to treatment so that the community knows it has occurred in waters adjacent to their property. Sonar will be applied to all of the red and orange areas as mapped on the treatment map page above.

We plan to perform the sign posting on Monday August 30th. These signs will only be placed on your dock or shoreline if you are in the treatment area or within Ecology’s required buffer zone. We plan to make the actual application of the material on Tuesday August 31st starting in the early morning. This application will take approximately one day to apply.

Information on Sonar is presented in the article below. There are no restrictions on the use of the treated water for swimming or fishing. There is an irrigation precaution if you draw water from the lake for that purpose.

Information on Sonar Aquatic Herbicide

The Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan developed by Cascade Water Alliance to combat Eurasian Milfoil in Lake Tapps has as it’s first step treatment of large infestations of this noxious weed with Sonar Aquatic Herbicide. Two formulas of Sonar are planned for use this year. Sonar Q and Sonar PR both have the same chemical makeup. Both are granular forms of this herbicide, the difference is the release rates from the pellet. The mode of action of Sonar is such that Eurasian Milfoil plants have to be exposed to this product for an extened period of time. Three applications at approximately two week intervals with this controlled release formula will accomplish this.

We have had a request through this page to make available information on Sonar. First, Sonar is approved for this use by both the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Washington State Department of Ecology. This application will be made under a permit from Ecology that regulates these uses. AquaTechnex will be executing a Eurasian Milfoil Control Program on Lake Tapps in August and September of 2010. This program involves the implementation of the Cascade Water Alliance’s Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan developed this spring and summer.
